  • No ask no tell. So ask.

it has been some time since i posted here.

mostly because… my idea for this particular tumblr was to be somewhat… “professional”. but, i am not a professional. not yet, anyway.

my pedagogy class for the semester didn’t make, so i am a one class woman - general psychology, which is turning out to be pretty fun. my professor is a wonderful lady from Orangefield, Texas who has taught for 30 years and now is a highschool counselor as well as part-time college professor. she is a hoot.

i have been working as a photographer since late April. it has been a challenge, mostly sore. some parts have been good. it is a career all on its own. i must say that while i enjoy photography very much, it is the sales aspect of a studio job that i find repugnant. it just is not for me.

i have not been able to sub very much this semester at all because of my studio hours. this past week, i was able to cover a few days at the junior high and had the pleasure of sharing a class with a student teacher from SFA. it reminded me why i took the job at the studio in the first place —- so that i would have more money for school.

it was a disappointment to find out the program with the school district, the one that allowed if a sub had so many days under their belt - they’d help pay for college toward a teaching degree - , had been done away with.

but there are other programs and if i keep my head down - get things done and don’t let the general bumps of life get in the way of my progress, i will be able to get some sort of financial help, I’m sure.

i just wanted to let you all know, i am still here, and my dream is still alive.

How do you have your classrooms arranged?

Like student desks, your desk, inclusion, pencil sharpener, etc?

One night President Obama and his wife Michelle decided to do something out of routine and go for a casual dinner at a restaurant that wasn’t too luxurious. When they were seated, the owner of the restaurant asked the President’s Secret Service if he could please speak to the First Lady in private. They obliged and Michelle had a conversation with the owner. Following this conversation President Obama asked Michelle, “Why was he so interested in talking to you?” She mentioned that in her teenage years, he had been madly in love with her. President Obama then said, “So if you had married him, you would now be the owner of this lovely restaurant,” to which Michelle responded, “No. If I had married him, he would now be the President.”

Whatever became of the moment when one first knew about death? There must have been one, a moment, in childhood, when it first occurred to you that you don’t go on forever. It must have been shattering, stamped into one’s memory. And yet I can’t remember it. It never occurred to me at all. We must be born with an intuition of mortality. Before we know the word for it, before we know that there are words, out we come, bloodied and squalling…with the knowledge that for all the points of the compass, there’s only one direction and time is its only measure.

Preparing for today's lesson...

  • Me: The curriculum says to include that there are adverbs. Ugh. I'm not gonna do that.
  • Co-worker: Why not?
  • Me: Because there is no way these kids know what an adverb is. And I don't want to teach a lesson on parts of speech...
  • Co-Worker: It will be fine
  • LATER, IN CLASS
  • Me: Okay...so procedural texts often use adverbs. Who can tell me what an adverb is?
  • Class: ...
  • The End.
